St. Joseph Communications, in partnership with PrinterOn, HP Canada and Toronto Pearson, brought forth this public printing terminal, the world’s first with the capacity to print high-resolution documents and photographs directly from smartphones and tablet computers. (Disclosure: St. Joseph Communications is the parent company of St. Joseph Media, which publishes Where Toronto.) Users with an iPhone, BlackBerry or Android device need only to download an app; after that you can send your media, print and pay within minutes. The ePrintit system uses cloud technology with SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) encryption to ensure your files remain your files. For guests without smartphones, the kiosks also connect with a variety of storage devices including USB flash drives and memory cards.

It all adds up to extra convenience for busy travelers. Heading straight from the airport to a meeting? Now you can quickly print that revised spreadsheet or slide deck and take care of those last-minute preparations en route. First time visiting the city? Now you can be anywhere with Internet access and send a document to one of the main Oak Park Public Library’s desktop printers. Need something faxed to you? Have it sent to a library printer. Home printer needs toner? Send your print job from home and pick it up at the library. Using a laptop or mobile device at the library? It’s now simple to print your documents on library printers. Queue up your print job with the library’s wireless printing service at http://oppl.org/print. You then have 60 minutes to retrieve it at the main library, 834 Lake St. There’s nothing to install on your end. At the library, purchase a print card with cash, then release your documents from the queue and print instantly.

Black and white printing costs 15 cents per page. Color printing costs 25 cents per page.

Print jobs can be retrieved during regular hours. Print jobs are deleted in 60 minutes or when the main library closes.

Documents, e-mail messages and Web content can all be printed using Oak Park Public Library’s wireless printing service. It works with PCs, Macs, and mobile devices. Anything that lets you send an e-mail or go online can send a job to the wireless printing service. There are no print drivers or additional software to install.

Even in the era of smartphones and tablets, businesses continue to rely on printing. Quocirca’s research reveals that there is certainly the appetite for mobile printing, with almost 60% of respondents stating that their organizations would like to print from their mobile devices, with around 25% currently investigating mobile print solutions.

Guests can print by emailing documents to a printer’s unique email address, uploading documents to a web printing portal via URL, or by using one of the mobile printing apps available for BlackBerry, iOS and Android devices, whichever method is suitable for them.
